Each industry head operated as a self-contained business \u2014 independent, successful, but inward-looking.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"595\" data-end=\"939\">What emerged was not one firm, but many firms sharing a logo.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"941\" data-end=\"1174\">Back then, the term <em data-start=\"961\" data-end=\"978\">\u201cprofit center\u201d<\/em> was fashionable, and the model was celebrated as entrepreneurial. In practice, it had begun to erode what made the organization valuable: shared knowledge, shared data, and shared accountability.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1181\" data-end=\"1212\"><strong data-start=\"1185\" data-end=\"1212\">Reframing the Structure<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1214\" data-end=\"1415\">The first task was to move from <em data-start=\"1246\" data-end=\"1268\">practice-based silos<\/em> to a <em data-start=\"1274\" data-end=\"1299\">system-based enterprise<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1214\" data-end=\"1415\">The solution wasn\u2019t to take control away from partners \u2014 it was to give them a <strong data-start=\"1382\" data-end=\"1414\">shared commercial discipline<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1417\" data-end=\"1722\">We built a unified <strong data-start=\"1436\" data-end=\"1458\">sales architecture<\/strong>, linking all practice heads to a common business development system governed by a single sales strategy and operating rhythm. Sales planning became a structured cycle \u2014 quarterly objectives, shared performance dashboards, and cross-practice pipeline visibility.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1724\" data-end=\"1931\">This was not common in 2010. Most consulting and search firms then treated \u201csales\u201d as a function of relationships, not structure. Yet even then, it was clear: <strong data-start=\"1883\" data-end=\"1931\">relationships scale when systems guide them.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1938\" data-end=\"1979\"><strong data-start=\"1942\" data-end=\"1979\">Building the Early Infrastructure<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1981\" data-end=\"2268\">The technical piece was the introduction of <strong data-start=\"2025\" data-end=\"2039\">Salesforce<\/strong>, which at the time was still evolving from CRM to platform.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1981\" data-end=\"2268\">We configured it not as a contact manager but as the firm\u2019s central nervous system \u2014 integrating business development, client management, and candidate information.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2270\" data-end=\"2584\">Perhaps the most important move was cleaning and securing the firm\u2019s <strong data-start=\"2339\" data-end=\"2361\">candidate database<\/strong>, a digital asset as valuable as any intellectual property. At a time when data privacy and protection were afterthoughts, we were already enforcing principles now standard in <em data-start=\"2537\" data-end=\"2554\">data governance<\/em> and <em data-start=\"2559\" data-end=\"2581\">knowledge management<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2586\" data-end=\"2746\">In hindsight, that project anticipated what\u2019s now called <em data-start=\"2643\" data-end=\"2675\">data as an institutional asset<\/em> \u2014 treating information not as an administrative record but as capital.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2753\" data-end=\"2777\"><strong data-start=\"2757\" data-end=\"2777\">The Forward Look<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2779\" data-end=\"2890\">Fifteen years later, these same principles underpin digital transformation in far more complex organizations.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2891\" data-end=\"3257\">\n<li data-start=\"2891\" data-end=\"2979\">\n<p data-start=\"2893\" data-end=\"2979\">The <strong data-start=\"2897\" data-end=\"2922\">profit-center tension<\/strong> has become today\u2019s challenge of <em data-start=\"2955\" data-end=\"2976\">platform governance<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2980\" data-end=\"3111\">\n<p data-start=\"2982\" data-end=\"3111\">The <strong data-start=\"2986\" data-end=\"3015\">Salesforce implementation<\/strong> foreshadowed <em data-start=\"3029\" data-end=\"3054\">system-of-record design<\/em> that now drives public and private institutions alike.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3112\" data-end=\"3257\">\n<p data-start=\"3114\" data-end=\"3257\">The <strong data-start=\"3118\" data-end=\"3156\">data cleansing and access controls<\/strong> anticipated <em data-start=\"3169\" data-end=\"3188\">privacy-by-design<\/em> and <em data-start=\"3193\" data-end=\"3216\">data-value frameworks<\/em> that define enterprise governance today.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3259\" data-end=\"3550\">At the time, it was a simple management fix: align partners, structure sales, and clean the database.<br data-start=\"3360\" data-end=\"3363\" \/>In retrospect, it was early <strong data-start=\"3391\" data-end=\"3422\">institutional modernization<\/strong> \u2014 a preview of what would later become RDG\u2019s work in transforming how organizations connect people, processes, and information.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"3557\" data-end=\"3575\"><strong data-start=\"3561\" data-end=\"3575\">The Lesson<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3577\" data-end=\"3769\">Institutions evolve when structure serves strategy, not the other way around.<br data-start=\"3654\" data-end=\"3657\" \/>Even in a professional services firm, independence only creates value when the system is designed to
